Nancy from Approaching Paleo
I’ve always loved writing — I used to write short stories (I’d call them “books”) in elementary school and give them to my teachers to read. I had a blog previously called “Naturally Capricious” (a play on my initials) but I couldn’t really find a consistent theme for it.
In 2015, I began following a Paleo lifestyle to help recover from severe digestion issues, mental health issues, and an eating disorder. It’s not a cure-all “diet,” but it did help me make significant improvements toward my physical and mental health.
I began to document my recipes, tips, and thoughts on Instagram and also on a blog. This was a time when Paleo wasn’t really popular, so I got a lot of questions about it.
Now, it’s expanded beyond just a food blog. It’s lifestyle, fitness, health, beauty, mental health… it’s a place for people to get the tools to empower them to make the most out of their own life.

I’m Paleo-ish — that’s the whole reason behind my Instagram handle! I think nutrition is so personalized, so I don’t like to fit into one category.
I love the Paleo lifestyle, and I adapt the foods to what make me feel best. I don’t eat gluten or dairy, and stay away from all grains except white/wild/black rice.
I do eat primarily fish and eggs, though I work for ButcherBox, a grass-fed meat subscription box, so I get in my red meat occasionally as well! I tend to eat on the lower-carb side, and prefer to get my carbs in the form of yuca, potatoes, or sweet potatoes if I feel like my body needs it (usually during times of intense training or stress).
Definitely thick cut fries. I love fries.
Take small steps and find something that’s easy for you to follow. Think of your health as an investment. It’s not “Oh, I don’t get to eat this cookie,” it’s “Ok, last time I had a cookie like that I went through a crazy sugar crash and I don’t want to go through that.”
Similarly, it’s not “I have to eat all these fruits and veggies.” Think of it as “I get to eat all these beautiful fruits and amazing veggies!”
Have fun with it. Make your food pretty. Use spices. Cook with friends.
